Nicholas Andry coined the word "orthopaedics" which derived from the Greek word for "correct" or "straight" and pediatric, meaning "child". As such orthopaedics initiallly developed with attention to children, but today modern orthopaedics encompasses all stages of life, in the correction of spinal and bony deformities. Orthopod is an abbreviation for an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Dr Theuns attends to most aspects of orthopaedics, but has a special interest in the following areas:
Arthroplasty ( the replacement of hip, knee and shoulder joints), as well as the revision of previous replacements; hand, elbow, foot and ankle surgery; trauma and sport injuries; and a special interest in pediatric orthopaedics with Dr Colyn.
